Passover

Pre-Passover Schedule

  • Thursday, April 10 – Bedikat Chametz (Searching for Chametz)
  • The search for chametz takes place after 7:50 PM.

Friday, April 11 – Burning of Chametz

Any chametz you are not keeping for Shabbat must be burned before 11:25 AM. Chametz may still be eaten Friday night and Shabbat morning, but anything leftover must be completely gone by Shabbat morning at 11:24 AM.

Shabbat, April 12 – Erev Pesach Guidelines

Shacharit & Chametz Timings
Shacharit begins at 8:00 AM.
Latest time to eat chametz: 10:07 AM.
Latest time to dispose of chametz: 11:24 AM.
At this time, the final Kol Chamira declaration is recited, renouncing ownership of any remaining chametz.

Shabbat Meals – How to Wash for Bread (Lechem Mishneh)
Since matzah cannot be eaten on Erev Pesach and Shabbat meals require two loaves of bread (Lechem Mishneh), we will provide challah rolls outside the shul after Torah reading and before Mussaf to be completed by 10:07 AM. (This setup is similar to when we have Kiddush on Rosh Hashanah.)
After this point, no more chametz may be eaten, and any remaining chametz must be fully disposed of before 11:24 AM.

Seudah Shlishit (Third Meal)
Seudah Shlishit will not take place in shul, as we want to ensure people arrive at the Pesach Seder with a good appetite. Instead, it should be eaten at home in the early afternoon and consist of foods such as fruits, vegetables, fish, or meat.

Key Halakhic Issues for Shabbat Erev Pesach

– Bedikat Chametz (Searching for Chametz): Must be done Thursday night, April 10.
– Burning Chametz: Must be done Friday morning, April 11, before 11:24 AM.
– Kol Chamira Declaration: First recited Thursday night after Bedikat Chametz, and again Shabbat morning before 11:24 AM to nullify any remaining chametz.
– Fast of the Firstborn: Observed on Thursday, April 10, with a siyum after Shacharit to exempt those fasting (7:15 AM Siyum).
– Eating Chametz on Shabbat: Chametz may be eaten Friday night and Shabbat morning, but all leftovers must be disposed of by 11:24 AM. Disposable table coverings and utensils are recommended.
– Disposing of Chametz on Shabbat: Leftover chametz can be flushed, given to a non-Jew, or placed in a designated trash bag and removed from the property.
– Muktzeh Status of Chametz: After 11:24 AM on Shabbat, any chametz found must be covered and left untouched until after the first days of Chag.
– Seudah Shlishit: Since neither bread nor matzah can be eaten, the meal should consist of fruits, vegetables, fish, or meat and should be eaten earlier in the day. There will be no Seudah Shlishit in shul.
– Preparations for the Seder: No preparations for the Seder may be made until Shabbat ends. Before beginning, one must recite Maariv or say Baruch haMavdil Bein Kodesh leKodesh.
– Lighting Yom Tov Candles: Must be lit after Shabbat from an existing flame. A 24-hour candle should be lit before Shabbat to ensure a flame is available.
– Havdalah on Pesach Night: Havdalah is included in Kiddush at the Seder, using the Yom Tov candles as the Havdalah candle.

Wishing everyone a smooth and meaningful preparation for Pesach.

Sale of Chametz:

As you probably know, during Passover, Jews are prohibited from both consuming and possessing chametz. Chametz refers to any product containing wheat, barley, spelt, oats, or rye that has leavened—examples include bread, pasta, cereal, cakes, cookies, beer, and scotch.

To comply with this prohibition, any chametz not consumed or discarded before Passover must be sold to a non-Jew. Chametz intended for use after Passover should be sealed and stored away in closets, cabinets, or rooms that are locked or securely taped shut throughout the entire holiday.

This sale involves numerous legal intricacies, requiring it to be conducted by a qualified rabbi who will act as a communal agent. Rabbi Wyne is available to serve as your agent, selling your chametz before Passover begins and repurchasing it immediately following the holiday.

If you would like Rabbi Wyne to act as your agent, please complete the form below to authorize him.

Thank you and wishing you a joyous and kosher Passover!

It is customary to make a donation when selling your Chametz:
